Co-Sleeping Lancaster Dad Charged With Involuntary Manslaughter Of 3-Month-Old

A Lancaster man is charged with involuntary manslaughter following the death of his 3-month-old son.

Police believe the infant's death is a resolute of the father, Rolston Sturkey, 30, of Lancaster co-sleeping.

Emergency Dispatch Services called police to the 700 block of Wyncroft Lane on Sep. 7, where the found the infant unresponsive.

Emergency medical providers tried and failed to revive the baby, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sturkey had smoked marijuana just before laying down to sleep along side the infant, according to his affidavit to police. The pair were sleeping on a pile of blankets on the floor, with the infant about six inches away from his chest, police said.

Sturkey allegedly called 911 when he woke-up and found his infant son was not breathing.

The Lancaster County Coroner's autopsy determined infant died from died as a result of accidental asphyxiation.

Sturkey is charged with three felonies including the involuntary manslaughter charge, endangering the welfare of a child and the manufacturing, delivery or possession of drugs. He is also facing a misdemeanor drug charge.

Police found 14.84 grams of cocaine, a digital scale and $1,680 in cash in the apartment, which Sturkey admitted belonged to him, according to the police affidavit.

Sturkey posted $50,000 in bail on Tuesday based on court records show.

His first preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 7.
